Blog: Why you should print your photographs

From a blog by Dale Laboratories

Here are a few good reasons why printing makes sense.

No. 1 – Your Family’s Pictures Need Life Insurance

Imagine how you’d feel if one day you checked your computer or cell phone and all the pictures you’d taken of your family were gone.

It’s a fact. Hard drives crash. Cell phones are lost or replaced. Cloud uploads turn out to be low-res files that aren’t of much use. This happens a lot more often than you would think!

The solution? A lab-quality 4″ x 6″ print (25¢) on Kodak photo paper will last for 100 years. The print you make today will be one your children can show to their grandchildren. Prints are the only sure photo insurance you can buy.

No. 2 – A Screen Image Is Not A Work of Art

Suppose you’ve visited the Louvre in Paris. You’ve paid admission to see the Mona Lisa and waited in a long line.

When you finally get to the front of the crowd there’s a video screen of Leonardo’s masterpiece instead of the actual painting!

Snapshots are fine on a cell phone. But, your best pictures should be printed for you and others to view and enjoy.

We can make you prints from wallet sized to 30″ x 40″ on photographic paper, canvas, fine art media, or metal.

No. 3 – The Most Important Events of Your Life Should to Be Printed

Do you have a wedding or other life event on a DVD? Lot’s of people do.

It’s not a good idea to entrust your images to a plastic disc for the long haul. Why? DVDs are not totally archival.

We recommend you make a printed photo album or book on archival Kodak photo paper as soon as possible. Contact your professional photographer to have him or her design a photo album for you.

No. 4 – Digital Formats Are Here Today But Gone Tomorrow

Back in the ’90s we made thousands of floppy discs like this one to digitally archive our clients’ images.

Floppy drives on computers are long gone. So, many of people can’t open their floppies today. Prints & enlargements will always be readable no matter how technology changes.

Did you know that we have our own in-house printer? Call us today at (954) 961-4450 to see how we can help print some of your favorite photos.

Don’t wait! Now’s the time to schedule your senior portraits

Congratulations!! You have made it through three years of high school and after the summer break starts the long awaited senior year. I’m sure the only thing on your mind right now are all of the fun things you’re planning for your summer break, and getting your senior pictures taken is probably not on that list.
You are planning your last full summer vacation that might include taking a trip of a lifetime or working a summer job or just taking it easy sleeping in, going to the beach and hanging with your friends.
These are all great. But, oh wait, you have to take your senior photos for the yearbook, and there is a deadline. But you might be thinking, “I have until August 12, and that is plenty of time to get it done. No rush.”

Here is a scenario that we see so often:

Fast forward to August 1
Wow, where has the time gone. I haven’t taken my senior photos yet so let me call now and schedule my appointment. What? You are all booked up? That can’t be, because I have a deadline! So the only appointment I can get is at 8 a.m.? That’s crazy early! I need to get my hair and makeup done before the photo session. Now I feel rushed and I wanted to try out a new hairdo and have this great makeup artist who wanted to try something new. Fine! I’ll take the appointment and just make it work.

Fast forward to proof pick up

This is not me! I hate my hair, my face looks painted on and I look uncomfortable. This can’t go into the yearbook. I want a redo! What do you mean there is no time for a redo? I can’t have this picture in my last yearbook!
If you want to make your senior photo shoot a great and successful experience it takes certain steps on your part to make this happen.

So what should I do right this moment?

  1. Schedule your photo session now before the summer is over and there is a big rush for the deadline. You will have a greater choice for a specific date and time.
  2. Even if you are not planning to take your photo until later in the summer, book your appointment now.
  3. For those who have a fall deadline keep in mind when school starts, the appointment times are limited to after school hours.  It is even more difficult when you have after-school activities such as practice, games and clubs. Saturday appointments are available, but those book up first.
  4. If you are thinking of taking pictures with your friends, schedule that appointment now because it takes even more effort on your part to plan for a time when all of you can come together.
  5. Get inspired! Take a look at our Senior Portraits Portfolio to get ideas on poses, styles and more.

Why Do I Need A Professional Headshot?

Our staff gets asked all the time what the benefits are of getting a professional headshot taken. So we thought we’d put all our advice into a blog post to make it easy.

First of all it presents a professional appearance, and we all know how important first impressions are and the significance of making it count.

You need to stand out from the crowd, you need to be different, you need to be professional and a selfie is not the image that you want to present as your first impression to any potential clients! You need to present yourself and your business as professional, important and progressive.

It will be used everywhere, especially on the web.

A few Examples:

  • On ALL of your social media
  • On your website
  • On your Linkedin profile
  • On your email header and/or signature
  • For your avatar on the web
  • Websites of  organization that you are involved with
  • On the dust jacket of your first novel
  • Your obituary

Why pay when I can get my friend to shoot me with their phone?

Remember, you will always get what you pay for so don’t go cheap at this point in your career. It certainly will cost more than a selfie or having you friend take a few snaps with their phone; but hey, come on, do something that will scream “LOOK AT ME, I’M A PROFESSIONAL!” Have your headshot taken professionally because the investment will generate more than you will spend.

A current headshot will always keep you up to date.

As styles like hair, makeup and clothing change, it is a good idea to keep your headshot current every couple of years. Old headshots make you look dated. When potential clients come to your website or view your social media posts they look for up-to-date posts and photos, so grab their attention with a current headshot.

Tips for the Best Portrait Session

Capturing the best portrait takes skill and patience. One of the best ways to assist the photographer is to be as prepared as possible when it comes time for your appointment. Below is a compilation our photographers’ top tips that each client should consider for their next portrait session.

Make-up

Females should keep their make-up natural-looking for normal daytime activities. Keep in mind that make-up that you might wear for night-time may look too heavy and un-natural. Guys should shave within an hour or two of your appointment, but please be careful to not sustain cuts or nicks. A five-o’clock shadow cannot be removed and all hairs/whiskers will be seen on camera. Blemishes may show on originals, but our retouching will minimize them on your finished portraits.

Hair

Wear your hair in your usual style. If you want to experiment with a new style, don’t pick the day of your appointment to do so. Allow three days after a haircut for a more natural look.

Outfit options

Bring one-to-two changes of clothing that best reflect your personality. Make sure to try on your outfits before you come to make sure you are comfortable with your choices. Be sure that your clothes are neat and pressed. It’s best to bring your clothing on hangers and/or in a garment bag. If you are taking family portraits, we recommend that outfits have a common color theme.

Poses

If you’re looking to capture a specific type of pose, talk about it with the photographer prior to the appointment so that we can accommodate. Know what poses you’re comfortable with and which ones you are not, and always be sure to talk to the photographer.

Props

If there are any specific props that you want included, make sure to discuss that with the photographer in advance to make sure we can accommodate.

Arrive early

Arriving early for your appointment will ease any stress that you may experience. This added time allows for you to get dressed, dress your children if they will also be in the shot, and also take care of any last minute touch-ups to make-up and hair.

Have a plan

Know what you want to use the finished portraits for so that your appointment captures all the photos that you will need. For example, if the photos are to be used for Holiday cards. Also, be sure to keep the photographer in the loop of what your plans are so we can make sure you get what you want.

Have FUN!

The most important thing in a portrait session is to have fun. Enjoy the special moment and let our photographers take the lead. Following his/her direction will help in making the session stress-free.

It’s Communion and Confirmation Season

Spring time is the time for first Communions and Confirmations and our staff at Gerlidne Photography specializes in capturing this sacred moment.

Communion is a sacrament that is usually received in the second grade, after receiving First Reconciliation. Children must be in at least their second year of Religious Education in order to prepare for and receive the Sacrament of Communion. Children and parents go through a formation process prior to receiving the sacrament.

Confirmation is only to be received after the child makes the decision to be confirmed.  This can happen any time in eighth grade or high school.

In most cases, our staff will be present on the day of the Communion or Confirmation service, fully equipped to capture the perfect photo. Prior to this date, the church will notify families that we will be taking photos and provide a flier with package prices and options.

If you are not able to take advantage of getting your child’s photo taken the day of, you can schedule a make-up appointment in our studio. For families who prefer a more private and creative session, a full portrait session is available for our standard minimum portrait session price.

For First Communion and Confirmation package photo questions, please email Melissa Carromero at melissa@gerlinde.com. For full portrait session questions, please call our main studio line (954) 961-4450.

Tips to capture the best Senior Portrait

Make the most of your senior portraits by following these easy tips that we’ve outlined below. You’re only a senior once, so let us help make this special. Putting in the effort now, will pay dividends in the end.

GETTING READY

Allow ample time to get ready so you won’t be rushed and uptight. You want to look and feel your best. Arrive at the studio 15 minutes before your appointment to allow time to pay for your session, complete any paperwork and to get any questions that you have answered.

HAIR

Wear your hair in your usual style. If you want to experiment with a new style, don’t pick the day of your appointment to do so. Allow three days after a haircut for a more natural look.

CLOTHING

Bring one-to-two changes of clothing that best reflect your personality. Make sure to try on your outfits before you come to make sure you are comfortable with your choices. Be sure that your clothes are neat and pressed. It’s best to bring your clothing on hangers and/or in a garment bag.

PROPS

We are interested in making your Senior Portrait the most important portrait of your life. We want these portraits to reflect YOU!! You are encouraged to bring personal items that reflect the real you. For example: hobbies, musical instruments, uniforms, sports equipment, trucks, etc. Any students that would like to take photos with their car would need to pay an additional fee to allow for the photographer to leave the studio.

FRIENDS

You can have your friends in your photos too!! Just have them come along with you and we will include them in some of your casual photo poses. If additional group photos are wanted, there will be an additional fee. Be sure to let us know if you are bringing a friend when you make your appointment.

GLASSES

Glasses often change magnification and can cause reflections and distortions that sometimes cannot be corrected in retouching. This can be a major problem, especially in outdoor photography. If you do not have contacts to wear, please discuss that you will be wearing glasses when you make your appointment.

MAKE – UP

Blemishes may show on previews, but our retouching will minimize them on your finished portraits.

CLASS RINGS

Don’t forget to wear your class ring! This is a very special item that always goes well with any outfit.
